Metcalfe

Hey guys welcome to The Hobby Hive today I have got 3 products from Metcalfe Models LTD which is a company based in North Yorkshire and owned by Nick Metcalfe and his wife.

Nick Metcalfe a printer by trade, along with wife Judy began their cardboard cut-out venture in 1991 as a part time experiment from their home in North Yorkshire. The idea came when Nick spotted a model of an Irish pub in a gift shop he visited whilst on holiday in Ireland and suddenly spotted potential for a business. Armed with a fascination for architecture and graphics, and with his expertise in printing Nick was able to make the idea a reality.

The products I have today are an A4 Cutting mat, PN183 N-Scale small factory and a PO254 00/HO Scale Village Shop and Cafe.

The first product is their PN183 N-Scale small factory which like all their buildings are cut from card and have the layered side sheets and acetate window sheets all which require gluing and they are made to go along side the other buildings in the same range. this item is amazing quality item and the design is spot on  they look perfect and are easy to assemble.

The next item is  A4 cutting mat that is made from amazing quality material and will protect your surface from cuts and glue that you be doing to build your items.
This item can be purchased from http://www.metcalfemodels.com/a4-cutting-mat

The final product i have is their  PO254 00/HO Scale Village Shop and Cafe kit which is cut from card and comes with printed cut paper with acetate windows. the item requires assembly with glue. This item works well with the other pieces in the range and the details on this kit is by far better than any other kits i have seen before.
This item can be purchased from http://www.metcalfemodels.com/village-shop-cafe

Overall my experience of building these 2 buildings has been entirely enjoyable and with the detail of each item they look fabulous. This product can be enjoyable for the whole family and when accompanied with a railway set it makes the evening entertaining.

The company founders are BO Penstoft and Jonas Faering who together have a total of over 36 years of gaming, painting and conversion experience. The pair have over 23 full armies hand painted and tiring of watching others play whilst they paint their armies they decided to brig proper speed painting to the hobby scene. Thus Quickshade and Colour Primers where born and a new era of how to paint a full army in a matter of days.

Today I have a bundle of products that will hep any hobbyist new and old create a perfect army in a matter of days. The products i have today are 3 colour primers, 1 mega paint set and 2 brushes from their range.

The 3 colour primers i have are their Platemail metal, Dragon Red and skeleton bone. these primers are ideal for those who need to cover a whole army quickly and evenly without the hassle of primering then adding colour secondly. The sprays dry quickly and cover evenly all you need to do is simply shake the can then spray but remember to always use in a well ventilated area and make sure the weather conditions are correct and not to cold or the spray will not dry properly. Overall the sprays are amazing and are a must for anyone who needs to paint an army or cover a large area quickly and evenly.

Next up is the 2 brushes from there range of wargamer brushes, These brushes the first is The Psycho brush what has a triangular handle for perfect grip and has rothmarder sable bristles, this brush is designed for insane detailing and minuscule lines to help your create a masterpiece of a mini or model. The second brush is their Vehicle/Terrain brush which has a flat end for highlighting and dry brushing large scale items such as tanks and terrain, this brush also has a triangular handle and rothmarder sable bristles. Both brushes are perfect for and a must have for any hobbyist and modeler.

The final product is their Mega Paint Set which is complete with 34 warpaints, 7 quickshades, 1 Anti shine varnish and the 3 top wargaming brushes.
The 7 Quickshades are easy to recognize with their red caps and their unique dropping bottles for easy to use and precise amount dropping the Quickshades are easy to use all you need to do is varnish your item first then brush the desired areas with the Quickshade ink  and once dry remove from the area your don't want it on then your ready to varnish again to seal the shade. The Quickshade Inks have a even consistency and cover perfectly.
The 5 metallic colours cover the desired area with ease and even consistency without the hassle of needing to recover certain areas due to it being to thin these paints are ideal for painting armor and weapons.
The 29 warpaints and 1 varnish all have white caps and like all The Army Painter paints they come in the dropper bottles to allow easy use of the paint and they can be mixed with other paints in the range to make the desired colour that your after. The consistency of all these paints are equally consistent and are amazing and easy to use.
The 3 brushes in the set all have triangular handles and are made with rothmarder bristles, the Small drybrush is designed to drybrush smaller areas and minis and has a 43 degree angle on the bristles to make it perfect for minis, the regiment brush is designed for speed painting whole armies and the sharp tip makes it easy and fast for base coating, the insane detail brush is designed for the small insane detail like the iris of an eye on a 28mm mini, facial tattoos or small drybrushing details, overall these brushes are ideal for the starter and the professionals.

Overall the products i have received are by far the best i have used and below is 2 items i painted using the paints and i have to say these are the greatest thing since Betty White  and i will be using these to paint many items and will definitely be sharing with my friends.

Model mates

Hey guys welcome to The Hobby Hive a place for modelers and gamers to come together and share there passion. Today I have some products from Model Mates the well known brand for modelling products they started the company in 2009 but had been trading under the name Dirty Down in 1980. Why Dirty Down you may ask well because there products make things dirty, their products have been used on films such as World War Z, Alien, James Bond, Star Wars and many more.

Firstly i would to show you these weathering effects these can be used on all manor of materials from plastic to resin and even metal as well as epoxy and they work with your normal paints and are not just for small scale models they can be used on props and  replica items.

The way you use these items is the same as you use any other weathering liquid all you do is brush or spray on the area you want it to but make sure you have varnished the item first, then once dry just wipe the excess of and leave it in the areas you need. They are one f the best products i have used and would recommend to others, the liquids are not to heavy or to thin and have an amazing consistency to the colour.

The next items are their range of sprays i have 4 spray primers and 5 weathering sprays to allow you to cover your items quicker and decrease your painting time which comes in handy when painting whole armies and larger items. The spray primers once shaken spay an even coat over your models and dries quiet quickly as well.

The Weathering sprays have the same quality of spray and coats evenly over the surface of your models or selected items and once varnished over the product it looks superb. the varies weathering effects you can choose from and these are a must for any budding artist and hobbyist.

These products can be purchased directly from www.modelmates.co.uk and the guys there are extremely helpful and can advise you with your need and will be more than happy to help you in your hour of need.

kromlech miniatures

Hi guys welcome to The Hobby Hive today i have 2 amazing miniatures from Kromlech.eu.
Kromlech are a company based in poland and create models, conversion bits, basing kits and more for all tabletop games. Their products are cast from the highest quality resin and with their team of professional they aim to make all their items air bubble and warp free.

The first product i have is one of their Thi'gh'taar - Devourer of flesh the miniature comes in 6 pieces including the 40mm base.

The detail of the miniature is amazing and the quality of the resin and cast are superb. This miniature can be used in 28mm heroic wargames and can be used as a demonic prince, general of demonic armies or a demonic champion. The miniature features from a range of textures from flesh and gore to armor and chain mail. The mini has a demonic right arm and a sword in his left arm and also has a really cool guy getting devoured through his gut. the mini required no clean-up and doesn't require any pinning to assemble all it requires is superglue and painting to your style. Here is the miniature i painted for my personal collection with a custom base.

The second product i have is their Orc 'spitfire' Assault Speeder which comes in 17 pieces all cast in high quality resin. The details of this miniature are absolutely magnificent from the grill on the front of the plane to the rivets and fine lines in the wings and fuselage of the plane.

The miniature comes with a pilot who comes with a missile in one hand and the plane controls in the other. The plane has 4 rockets that fit under the wings and has 2 machine guns that attach on top of the fuselage and 2 exhaust pipes one for each side. The extra details that this mini features are the wing details showing pipes and all the scrap parts that have been detailed in to make it look like a bash job and it comes with a acrylic stand.
The miniature comes ready to assemble and requires some pinning and superglue you will also need some sprue cutters or a knife to cut parts from the cast blocks and requires painting to your army style. Here is the miniature I painted for my personal collection.

Both miniatures have been primed with model mates grey primer and painted using Army Painter colours and quick shades before being varnished with a Matt varnish.
The miniatures can be purchased from Kromlech.eu directly.

Shire archery

Hey guys welcome to Jam Reviews today I have some amazing items from Shire Archery.

Shire Archery is a company based in the town of Chesterfield with its bustling market and famed for its Church Spire which is both twisted and bent! I spoke with the owner Trevor Lilley and asked him some questions about his business and the journey he has been on.

I asked him about his business and how long has the business been going/products/customers?

"I started to take the idea of operating as a 'craft business' seriously, laying the foundations in 2008-2011 whilst working for a local engineering company; as local archers and people from all over had contacted me through recommendation for several years prior. Taking the plunge Shire Archery opened as a business in 2012."

"It’s just me at the moment but I have a really good team around me, the business quickly grew beyond my original plan and expectations. I initially started the business to enable me to run a series of simple day courses making arrows and demonstrating in period costume, alongside making custom arrows, sourcing hard to find natural materials and supporting a couple of craftsmen. The product side of things grew beyond my reckoning after opening accounts with several companies that have archery related products, the real 'icing on the cake' came in January this year when I was offered a dealership with Bearpaw! I was ‘over the moon’ to be accepted."

"This solid base has expanded in product range and scope; we now have over 200 chosen core products stocked with at least another 150 products to add going forwards. What you see is in stock or within a couple weeks of order; we are also able to pre-order anything from the full-range of products in the catalogs of our accounts & dealerships- it is mind boggling."

"Apart from advertising in NFAS and a few Banner Ads on forums all of our custom comes from word of mouth so we must be doing something right! To keep updated we are on Facebook which is operated as an informal Blog, news, gallery and products release platform. The support out there from the traditional archery community has been amazing and I can only say thank you, as without it we would not exist."

I was curious what inspired him start such a amazing business? and the ethos/philosophy behind it?

"With all the travel and experience of my life I have met some amazing, skilled, incredibly welcoming people all over Europe and the UK. Out of that time I have always wanted a workshop of my own; perhaps in my own small way to return the favor. The modern notion that items which are hand crafted are cruder, quaint, expensive or inferior compared to those that are mass manufactured or branded I find utterly bizarre".

"Where’s the Love! The time! The passion!"

"I wanted to create a workshop space to carry on making, with a specialist web shop & sales space, all for the traditional archer by a traditional archer from the ground up. It would be self-funded not in debt to itself. Product quality is paramount so I don't sell anything I am not happy to use myself. This forms the core values, the focus; on this I will not be swayed."

"If I had to have a simple mission statement for 'Shire Archery' that summarizes all this it would be-"

"Raising the Profile of Trad-Archery"

So with all this going on with him i was curious as to what he does in his down time?

"I have a small library of History, Archery and Technical books, many I have read cover to cover. My partner questions how I fit it all into my head. I am part of a local Re-enactment group circa 1320's.
I also like nature and hiking, I am very lucky to live close to the Peak District National Park and Sherwood Forest- famed for a certain Mr. Hood.I love Pork Pie, a good Cheese Board and Stout."

So with a business growing this fast i was curious where he sees himself in 5 years time?

"We aren't the biggest but we are certainly trying hard to be up there with the best. No one, not even the big pro-shops can stock everything in every conceivable variation. I am always searching for interesting products or crafts people who would like mutual support- I would like to expand the bow side of things next. In 5 years time if not before it would be brilliant to have a workshop-retail space to welcome customers."

Are all items pre made or can you do a custom order for a customer that wants something special?

"The stock items are as you see them, but when it comes to arrows the range of materials available- and that is growing- enables a wide range of customization for a customers own arrow needs, so our
arrows are almost always custom, then there are requests for historical reproductions, historical look alikes, shootable fantasy inspired, LARP, re-enactment safety. Some of the leather items can also be customized as we know the craftsmen".

Below are some of the products that Shire Archery supply and sell from there store http://www.shirearchery.co.uk/
The items supplied where 2 handmade historical repo arrows and a leather arm guard.

The 2 arrows supplied came with 2 different arrow heads one was a leaf blade head and the other a 15th century hunting tip with blades to prevent it from falling out of your prey.

The flights of these arrows are all hand glued and bound and are self notched for your bowstring. The quality of these arrows are superb and are made to a high quality with nice wooden shafts.

The second product supplied was a Suede leather arm guard or Bushman Cairn with elastic string strap and bone button fasteners.
With a middle reinforcement  panel to protect from the bowstring recoil. I know i am wearing it the wrong way in the pictures but it was entirely put on that way to hold the string and to show how it fastens.

In the package I received was also a stylish metal shire archery pin.
